Estimados Amigos in the Diocese of West Texas,
I am writing to you on behalf of the Upper Valley Episcopal Churches (UVEC). We are pleased and honored to serve as the host committee for the 115th Annual Diocesan Council February 21 – 23, 2019 at the McAllen Convention Center in beautiful McAllen, Texas. The worshiping communities of St. John’s – McAllen, St. Peter and St. Paul – Mission, Grace – Weslaco, Trinity – Pharr, and St. Matthew’s – Edinburg await your arrival to one of Texas’ best kept secrets: The Rio Grande Valley.
In their wisdom, our Bishops have chosen a theme for council that is aligned with The Most Rev. Michael Curry’s plan for the church to seek “The Way of Love.” For Diocesan Council 2019, our theme comes from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians: “Walk in love as Christ loved us.” (Ephesians 5:2). This passage challenges us to remember our Baptismal Covenant and “proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ.” (Book of Common Prayer, pg. 305). It reminds us that love is not merely a disposition or sentiment of the heart, but also an active way of being in the world. It is certainly a task that is worthy of our best efforts!
Council will begin on Thursday, February 21st, 2019 when Registration opens at 10:00 AM; council business begins at 1:00 PM. Our Council delegation will be welcomed and given some helpful information by local author and radio personality, W.F. Strong. At the close of business on Thursday, we will join together to celebrate Eucharist. Afterwards, you will be on your own for dinner. There are many fine restaurants in McAllen, and we hope you will try some of them. The Bishop’s Luncheon will be held on Friday, with guest speaker The Rt. Rev. Daniel Gutierrez, Bishop of the Diocese of Pennsylvania. After close of business on Friday, you will be treated to a “Border Buttermilk Reception” before the Friday evening banquet. After business on Saturday, Council 2019 will draw to a close.
Online registration for clergy, delegates, and alternates will open on December 21, 2018. Until then, visit www.council-dwtx.org for hotel and restaurant information, the agenda, nomination forms, and other helpful links. More information will be added there as council draws nearer. The UVEC is ready to welcome you to our home and do everything in our power to make your Council 2019 experience meaningful and enjoyable.
