From the Rev. David Read, president of the Standing Committee:
Dear Clergy and People of West Texas,
Grace to you and Peace. The 2016 Diocesan Council adopted a resolution outlining the process by which the Diocese of West Texas will elect a Bishop Suffragan. The Standing Committee has been charged with overseeing this discernment process. The nomination period opened on July 1, and the Standing Committee received nominations through September 30. These potential nominees then underwent the canonically mandated background screenings by an outside agency, and were invited to respond in writing to a series of questions. We use the term “potential nominees” because these men and women will not formally become “nominees” until the first ballot – a nominating ballot – is cast on February 25, 2017.
Today, we are pleased to share with the Diocese the names, biographical information, and written responses from seven priests who are potential nominees for Suffragan Bishop of West Texas. We are grateful to these men and women for their faithfulness, and for their willingness to offer themselves to the Lord and to the Diocese of West Texas. We invite you to hold them in your daily prayers in the weeks leading up to the election.
In preparation for the election, the Standing Committee will host three Discernment Forums.
- Saturday, January 28, 9:00 am – Noon, at St. Alban’s, Harlingen
- Saturday, January 28, 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm, at Church of the Good Shepherd, Corpus Christi
- Sunday, January 29, 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm, at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas, San Antonio
The Standing Committee encourages Clergy and Delegates/Alternates to Council, as well as visitors, to attend one of the forums. The forums are an opportunity for you to see and hear directly from these potential nominees, and are an important element of this discernment process. Members of the diocese also have the opportunity to submit topics and questions to possibly be addressed by potential nominees during these forums. E-mail suggestions to email@example.com by December 31.
Again, we invite you to remain in prayer for these potential nominees, and for the Diocese of West Texas, as we seek to discern God’s will.
On Behalf of the Standing Committee,
The Rev. David G. Read, President
