The Challenge Continues in 2014
Bishop Lillibridge challenged the diocese in his annual address in 2012 to build three new homes in six years. Builds will take place every other year, in 2013, 2015, and 2017; and the in-between years are devoted to raising funds. The bishop asked each church to give $300/year to this initiative. With the first build complete, the diocese will again focus on Habitat for Humanity during Council 2014 with concentrated efforts to raise funds for the second home.
Plans for the 2015 Habitat build
Bishop Lillibridge has invited congegations to consider serving as the host for the next Habitat for Humanity home that the diocese will build; saying, “We have completed the first of the three houses that I asked the diocese to build (2013, 2015, 2017). It was a wonderful success and a life changing experience for both the family and all who worked on the house in Lockhart.
The good people of Emmanuel, Lockhart, coordinated the effort with the local Habitat Affiliate, community volunteers, and neighboring Lockhart congregations. In addition, the bulk of the labor was provided by Episcopalians throughout our diocese working a day or more, including Bishop Reed and me. This is a good experience for a congregation, and there is plenty of able assistance in the effort.”
Participating in Habitat for Humanity offers a place for many to engage in mission work locally. The Rev. John Badders, chair of Habitat Builders for West Texas, hopes the first home served as a catalyst and has encouraged others to step up and build a home.
