Habitat Builders for West Texas
The first build of the three-build diocesan initiative was completed in October 2013 in Lockhart, Texas. The Habitat build began on June 22, and the home is for a widow and her two young children. Bishop Lillibridge and Bishop Reed, as well as a large number of volunteers from several diocesan churches, were present to lend a hand in the build over the course of the summer. The home was officially dedicated on October 12 by Bishop Lillibridge.
Bishop Lillibridge challenged to the diocese in his annual address in 2012 to build three new homes in six years. Builds will take place every other year, in 2013, 2015, and 2017; and the in-between years are devoted to raising funds. The bishop asked each church to give $300/year to this initiative. With the first build complete, the diocese will enter 2014 with concentrated efforts to raise funds for the second home. Plans for the 2015 Habitat build are forthcoming.
Participating in Habitat for Humanity offers a place for many to engage in mission work locally. The Rev. John Badders, chair of Habitat Builders for West Texas, hopes the first home served as a catalyst and has encouraged others to step up and build a home.
