Come early to sign-in (pre-registration required) and get a good
seat for the live concert featuring BY THE TREE. St. Luke's,
San Antonio was instrumental in reserving this band and Christ
Church is working directly with them to create a memorable
experience for all attending.
If you're not familiar with this group, here is a little history
from
Wikipedia.
BY THE TREE was founded in Weatherford, Texas
in 1997 by Chuck Dennie and Bala Boyd.
As with
most aspiring musical groups, By the Tree got their
start playing a series of small venues -
predominantly churches - throughout the southern and
southwestern United States. Their near-constant
touring cultivated a sizeable fan base.
In 1999 they released two independent,
self-produced CDs, which they sold at their
concerts. By 2001, these two CDs had sold a combined
30,000 units, which more than recouped their
production costs, and additionally brought them to
the attention of the Gospel music industry.

On Saturday morning, participants will join Council to see an intergenerational
play presented by Christ Church,
The
Tale of the Three Trees, and be
commissioned as "missioners of the diocese," then go to Good
Samaritan Community Services.
Good
Samaritan Community Services, formerly the Good Samaritan
Center, was founded in 1951 on San Antonio's
near west side by the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas under the
leadership of Bishop Everett Jones, and grew out of a downtown
mission of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Today, GSCS is a private, non-profit 501c3 organization, a United
Way agency and neighborhood center providing comprehensive services
to over 3,000 low-income individuals and 1800 families annually.
Since 1951, Good Samaritan Community Services has been the primary
social service resource for residents of the near west side of San
Antonio, one of our community's most impoverished areas. Their
commitment to improving the
quality of life in this high-risk area is embodied in
their mission, which is to effect
positive change in the lives of individuals and families through
quality services focused on prevention and intervention. Visit
their website at
http://www.goodsamaritancommunityservices.org/home.html.
This Saturday we will individually have an impact
in one of the poorest neighborhoods in San Antonio. We will
help Good Samaritan community Services make a better neighborhood
for thousands of people taking on projects such as graffiti clean
up, landscaping, playground clean ups and much more!
All young people in grades nine through 12 are invited to
participate in the Youth In Action 2008. Cost is $20, and
registrations must be made by February 18. All participants
will receive a t-shirt, pizza, breakfast and lunch on Saturday.
One adult sponsor must accompany every six young people.
